The phrase “IT” was coined in the early 1970s. At that time it was assumed that IT meant “information technology.” In most cases, however, the meaning of the phrase has changed to something much broader and more specific.
Today’s use of the term is far more concerned with skills, equipment, and communications than with technical objects themselves. One can have computer knowledge but not be an expert on equipment that is critical to the operation of a business.

A tech’s term is often used in reference to software. A tech, in this context, is typically a system administrator. Because the IT function relates to the functions of many different departments within an organization, the term tech can be applied to any department with which one would be unfamiliar.
The term tech can be quite broad and can be applied to groups of individuals or to individual people. Generally, it refers to professionals whose sole function is to administer software and hardware for the benefit of others. In the case of larger organizations, however, a tech may oversee the entire IT department and, accordingly, he/she might also be a manager.
Even in smaller organizations, IT is a highly specialized area of practice. Often, one would need to work within the framework of a company, as a member of a management team, to gain sufficient experience and training to qualify for a job as a tech. Computer science is an academic discipline concerned with the design, implementation, and evaluation of computer systems. The principles behind computer science apply to all aspects of IT including the design and operation of systems.
It is common for a job description of an IT position to include certain keywords or phrases. These are intended to characterize the nature of the work to be performed by the applicant.
Usually, the words “security”network” are included in job descriptions in order to distinguish between the duties of the applicant and those of a typical IT worker. Some positions include the words “Linux”UNIX” in their descriptions to distinguish between candidates who work exclusively with UNIX and Linux operating systems and others who work exclusively with UNIX. “Cloud computing”data warehousing” are also frequently used in job descriptions to distinguish between the responsibilities of IT professionals.
In job descriptions, IT refers to the application of technical skill, and all types of IT jobs will require extensive technical knowledge. In these kinds of positions, there is usually only one IT employee. For other positions, the term is often more general, referring to the employee’s skill set.
The difference between a good IT worker and a bad one is more than mere technical knowledge. A good tech must possess outstanding interpersonal skills, both in the areas of communication and in problem solving, and must be comfortable working in a team.
One of the most obvious thing to know about IT is that it involves numbers. In general, jobs involving IT involve mathematics, and such jobs demand students that are willing to learn the techniques of mathematics.
For certain positions, there are specific academic qualifications, like a degree in computer science or math. This often is the case in some positions where there is only one IT employee. In these cases, a student must be adept at languages like Java, C++, and C#.
